When you browse online you’ll come across a wide range of star projectors with a wide range of pricing.  You’ve got an interest in picking one up to enjoy at home but you’re wondering if they’re worth it.

Star projectors are worth it providing you have a clear expectation of what they will do and pick the correct product.  There are low-cost options that just project dots of light as stars, and high-cost options that project a realistic view of the night sky.

The high cost star projectors are definitely worth it for anyone who loves to gaze at the stars. They provide a realistic view of the star-filled sky, complete with shooting stars and a moving projection. Many people find them relaxing and enjoyable to watch.

The lower cost models can be worth it for shoppers who are looking to add some pizzazz to their home décor. These tend to be more focused on delivering a calming ambiance rather than a realistic night sky.

When deciding if a star projector is right for you, consider how you plan on using it and what type of atmosphere you’re hoping to create in your space.

Low Cost Star Projector Options

There are a lot of options at the low cost end of things.  I’ve a couple of personal favourites I’ll recommend in a moment, but first here are some general points to be aware of:

  • Low-cost options rarely offer a realistic view of the night sky
  • They typically use a coloured lazer to project ‘stars’
  • They tend to offer a colourful nebula option
  • The room won’t be dark due to the amount of ambient light given off

These are popular with those who want to provide ambient lighting or create an eye-catching focal point in any room, for example they could be used to create a chill out room at a party.

With those points out the way these are the devices I think you should check out:

High Cost Star Projector Options

There are far fewer options for high-end star projectors.  My personal recommendation is the Sega Homestar Flux because I think it strikes a great balance between price and realism.

The Flux provides you with a realistic view of the night sky, and thanks to a constellation disc it can also be used for educational purposes, helping adults and children learn how to navigate the stars.

Top Pick: Flux

The Homestar Flux is very easy to operate and has a range of optional discs, so you can mix things up with different scenes. It’s one of a few products that projects a realistic night sky rather than just dots of light. One disc is a full-sky map, another has both stars and the constellations marked on it. Hugely popular, can be hard to get hold of.

Sega Homestar Flux

Pros

  • 60,000 stars
  • Range of optional discs
  • 5-watt white LED

Cons

  • Some consider it too bright
  • Can be hard to find

I’ve got to give an honourable mention to the Dark-Sky DS1 which ups the star count to 4.1 MILLION stars! It’s a wonderful projector but out of the price range for most people and there have been ongoing resourcing problems, with many people contacting me asking if I know how to get one/will I sell the one I have. In case you’re wondering, no I won’t!

Conclusion

There are many types of home star projector available on the market. So, whether you want to project stars onto your ceiling for a romantic evening or create a visual display for a party chill out room, there is definitely a model out there worth considering!

The best thing you can do is check out video examples of any device you’re considering purchasing to see if it matches your expectations in terms of features, functions and visuals.

The benefits of using one of these devices include creating ambiance and atmosphere, providing entertainment and stimulating conversation.

If you think a home star projector would be beneficial for you, then go ahead and give it a try, you may be surprised at just how much you enjoy it.
