Shoppers who are looking for a home star projector may be wondering where to place it in their room for the best results.

A star projector should be placed in the centre of the room, so it can project directly up.  If placed at an extreme aangle, the projected image will be distorted around the edges.

Of course this isn’t always practical, it really depends on the size and layout of the room you plan on using it in.

Considerations

When choosing the placement of your star projector, consider the following:

Power outlet: Most devices will require connecting to a power outlet, make sure there is one available. If you plan on using an extension lead try to ensure it doesn’t cause a trip hazard, remember the room will be dark.

Distance from wall/ceiling: The closer to the projection surface, the brighter, but smaller, the projection.  Further away gives a much bigger image, but it won’t be as bright.  The wrong distance can also lead to an out of focus image, so be sure to check the product information for the ideal focal length.

Blocking objects: Is there anything that could get in the way of the projection, casting a shadow.  This could be something near the projector, such as a houseplant, or could be something on the ceiling such as the room light or ceiling fan.

Projection angle: When placed at an angle, the projected image will be distorted, some parts will be stretched, others compressed. The brightness may also vary, with the furthest away section dimmer than other parts of the projection.

This final point is the one to watch out for when considering placement as it directly impacts the projected image.

Imagine the projection as a circle.  If you squish a circle, you change the shape, and that can alter the shape of the projection.

Fortunately many units are designed to allow for this a little, and having the projector off centre at a moderate angle shouldn’t cause problems.

However, if you have it placed at an extreme angle you may find the image doesn’t look as good as you hoped.

Generally this is why it’s recommended to place it close to the middle of the room, so it can project an even image directly up without any distortion taking place.

Keeping these tips in mind I hope you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect spot for your star projector!

Suggested Star Projector Placements

Looking for some inspiration?  Here are X placement suggestions for you to try:

On the floor: Let’s start with the obvious one, place the unit on the floor pointing directly up at your ceiling.  For most projectors this should give you the best result, providing your ceiling isn’t higher than the recommended focal distance.

Room Placement Floor

Bedside table: My favourite spot for testing out star projectors.  The bedside table is usually located close to a power outlet and allows you to experiment with projecting up on the ceiling, or on to the closest wall.  Projecting on to a close wall can give you a very distorted image, but it can look great if you’re using a nebula or ocean projector.

Bookshelf: Keeps your device out of the way and gives you some interesting options.  You could project up to the ceiling, across the room to another wall, or, if it is possible, down towards the floor.
